It is surprising that a student was suspended for speaking her own language. This example illustrates that discrimination, unfortunately, may still heavily present in our world. I understand if the school was concerned about the content of the discussion (as they could not understand it) but as long as the students weren't discussing anything considered against the rules, I really don't see why it was a problem. Although I do agree the title is misleading (granted, it's a news article...), this was still an interesting read! It is a shame that she was treated a bit harshly for not only using, but teaching another student her language--I don't really see the harm in that regardless of if she was teaching the student "friendly" or "non-friendly" words--learning language is learning language!

ReplyDeleteI think the title is incredibly misleading. She was suspended from playing in a basketball game that night... Hardly worth an outcry.
